Introduction to the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence and Cyber Security (FAIX) at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM)

The establishment of the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence and Cyber Security (FAIX) marks a significant milestone for Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) as it steps boldly into the forefront of education and research within Malaysia's Technical University Network (MTUN) and on a national scale. Officially founded on July 22, 2024, FAIX embodies UTeM’s proactive approach to addressing the evolving demands of technology and higher education, all while aligning with the vision and aspirations set forth by the Ministry of Higher Education.

Under the esteemed leadership of Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Ts Dr. Massila Kamalrudin, UTeM is committed to becoming a primary driver in producing a workforce equipped with the necessary skills to meet the country’s ambitious goal of cultivating 200,000 AI specialists and 100,000 cyber security experts by 2030. This endeavor underscores Malaysia's aspiration to emerge as a regional technology leader, capable of competing within the global digital landscape.

FAIX is strategically designed to combine the core elements of Artificial Intelligence and Cyber Security, which are not only relevant but critical to modern society and industries worldwide. By introducing this new faculty, UTeM aims to lead both the MTUN and the national education landscape, responding effectively to the current global demands for expertise in these two interrelated fields. The faculty reinforces UTeM's commitment to "Advanced Manufacturing and Computing Technology," integrating cutting-edge AI and cyber security advancements into its curriculum and research.

As a leading hub for AI and cyber security research, FAIX emphasizes integrated research methodologies to tackle contemporary industrial challenges. In terms of academic offerings, FAIX provides a variety of programs tailored to meet industry needs, including:

  • Bachelor of Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence) with Honours
  • Bachelor of Computer Science (Computer Security) with Honours
  • Master of Technology in Data Science and Analytics
  • Master of Technology in Data Science and Analytics (Open and Distance Learning - ODL)
  • Master of Computer Science (Security Science)

These programs are designed to ensure that students not only acquire theoretical knowledge but also engage in hands-on experiences that prepare them for the complexities and challenges of the industry. The curricula have been developed with significant input from industry experts, maintaining high standards of relevance and quality. By June 2025, we anticipate welcoming our inaugural cohort of students, who will embark on an educational journey rich with opportunities for personal and professional growth. As we prepare to accept applications for the 2025/2026 academic year, we are eager to cultivate a diverse and dynamic community of learners who are passionate about shaping the future of technology.

FAIX is home to a dedicated team of 25 academic staff and 5 administrative personnel. Our faculty members bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise in their respective fields, ensuring that students receive top-quality education and mentorship throughout their academic endeavours. We are enthusiastic about fostering a collaborative environment where ideas can flourish, and innovation thrives.
